Glenn McGrath Fit for ICC Trophy

Bad news for opening batsmen in the coming year as it is understood that Glenn McGrath believes he is fit and raring to go following his recent enforced absence from the Australia cricket team due to his decision to look after his wife but nows he's back and will be part of the Australian team for the Champions Trophy next month in India.

Selectors originally wanted the veteran fast bowler to make his comeback after seven months out of the game by playing three Pura Cup games for NSW before the first Ashes Test on November 23.

But they have bowed to McGrath's strong desire to make his comeback for Australia and he was named in the 14-man squad for the tournament, a mini-World Cup which Australia has never won and is desperate to do so.

The 36-year-old is delighted to be back in the mainstream after the difficulties he faced through this year following wife Jane's cancer treatment.

"I think I am in the same position as the other bowlers," said McGrath, bristling with his trademark confidence at NSW training yesterday.

"I think I am slightly better where I have had more time off and I've been training longer – they obviously had to have a break when they came back from overseas.

"So I don't think I will be too different to where they are – who knows, maybe a little bit in front."

McGrath thought it was a 50-50 bet whether he would be picked in the squad.

"It was a bit of a toss of the coin but the selectors thought this was the best way to go," he said.

Though openers Matthew Hayden and Phil Jaques have been included for this month's three-way tournament against India and the West Indies in Malaysia, they have been omitted from the Champions Trophy squad, allowing incumbent Simon Katich to feel more secure about his spot.

McGrath will renew hostilities with many of the Ashes-bound England squad when the sides meet in Jaipur on October 21.

McGrath revealed he had spoken to Australian coach John Buchanan and chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch recently and expressed his point of view about his return to the field.

"But I think they pretty much knew where I stood and it was up to them what they thought was best not only for me but the team," McGrath said.

"At the end of the day they think heading over to India bowling in the conditions over there and training off field as well is as tough as you get and hopefully a good lead-up into the Ashes," he said.

And he said his recall was a big psychological boost as much as anything.

"For me personally it gives me a lot of confidence," he said. "When (operations manager) Michael Brown rang me this morning with the news I was pumped."
